Save the Tiger!

In last June this year I was discussing with a senior friend about protests by environmentalists for the expansion of the NH7 between Seoni and Nagpur. Below are a few details on the matter.

Tigers are definitely in a BIG BIG danger in India (only 1411 remaining at last count, last year!) and I am afraid whether the future generations will have an opportunity to see one, a few years down. I am personally for doing whatever it takes to make sure tigers are protected and their count increased, though I am also for development of much-needed world class infrastructure in India. Development v/s conservation is a perpetual debate and I am of the view that humans have unfairly exploited the planet earthforour desires while it is a shared resource of all theflora and founathat live and contribute to the life on the planet. With global warming being the most important issue facing the very survival of all of us, one wonders what should take precedence if we have to choose between development or survival, though the ideal answer one hopes for is 'both'. Below are links to a few reports in the Times of India that may throw some light on the matter. In India where there is plenty of prey, a male tiger needs fromtwelve toninety fivesquare kilometers area for its territory and corridors are required for their movement between territories, for and after reproduction (and the expansion of NH7 is supposed to divide/cut the corridor between tiger habitats making the movement between territories impossible). http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Tiger_authority_against_4-laning_NH_7_at_Pench/rssarticleshow/3734751.cms http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/3436544.cms http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-3110419,prtpage-1.cms I wish the country is able to find an amicable solution to the matter that protects the interests of the development as well as that of the ecosystem (which is also in human interest only, ultimately).
